??? on Rhetorical Analysis
ncantre | March 25, 2009One question that I have about the analysis is how much depth do we need to go into for each point that we are trying to make. Do we need to use direct quotes in proving our point or would paraphrasing be suffiecient. Another question I have is do we need to do intext citations if we are just talking about a certain point brought up by the PSA if were not taking a direct quote.

Nick,
I don’t know how to answer the first question about how much depth you need to go into. I would say, enough to make your point but that’s vague. I would recommend that you use direct quotes and summaries/paraphrases of the PSA whenever appropriate or necessary. The PSA is what you’re talking about so you’ll probably use at least one example in each body paragraph (that means you’ll have an in-text citation for each body paragraph).
As for the second question, if you’re talking about a certain point brought up by the PSA and you’re putting the PSA creator’s ideas in your own words, then do cite it. If you have specific examples in your text where you have that questions I would recommend you send me a copy of your draft with clear direction where to look and I can help you decide whether you should cite or don’t need to.
I hope this helped. If you have further questions or want to run some ideas by me I would strongly recommend you email me.
Best,
Brittany
